The Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable stamp was issued February 20, 1987 in the year of the 150th birthday of Chicago, Illinois. A pioneer and entrepreneur, Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable is acknowledged as the founder of Chicago for having established the first permanent trading post at the mouth of the Chicago River in 1779. By 1973 the museum had outgrown its space and was moved to its current location in Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood. The name of the museum was eventually changed to the DuSable Museum of African American History to honor Jean-Baptist-Point Du Sable.
